Bakersfield Hillcrest Church Promotes Healthy Living Through Cooking Classes

Updated: 7 hours ago

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - In December 2023, Dr. Adina Buxton launched a Health Ministry initiative at the Bakersfield Hillcrest Seventh-day Adventist Church, aiming to promote wellness through plant-based nutrition. The ministry began with a holiday-themed healthy cooking class, featuring plant-based recipes designed for the festive season.

Since its inception, the program has grown steadily, now hosting six cooking classes each year with attendance regularly exceeding 40 participants. Dr. Buxton emphasizes member involvement, with each class featuring different presenters who bring their own distinctive approach to healthy food preparation.

The outreach is open to both members of the Adventist community and the general public who are interested in improving their dietary habits. The classes have become more than just educational—they foster a sense of community and connection. Notably, a local health-focused business owner began attending the classes and has since started Bible studies, expressing interest in baptism.

The next healthy cooking class is scheduled for October 2025, continuing the church’s mission to inspire holistic well-being through practical, faith-based initiatives.
