A fire erupted at the San Francisco Central Seventh-day Adventist Church on Monday, June 29, 2026. The church, which stands at the corner of California and Broderick streets in the Lower Pacific Heights area, is a neighborhood landmark dating to the 1890s. The San Francisco Fire Department responded swiftly, with more than 100 firefighters actively fighting the fire. By nightfall, the fire was contained, though not yet fully under control, and fire department personnel remained on scene overnight. Media reports also indicated that the incident prompted a shelter-in-place order, street closures, and a power shutoff in the surrounding area.
No injuries have been reported, and there is deep appreciation for the concern and support that has been expressed so widely. Housed in a building that dates to 1892, San Francisco Central has been part of this neighborhood for nearly a century. Since 1927, the congregation has worshiped, served, and ministered alongside its neighbors, and generations of members have called this corner of the city home. Over those decades, the church family has woven itself into the life of the community—caring for those around them and sharing in the joys and struggles of the neighborhood they love. Continued prayers are requested for the safety and wellbeing of the surrounding community, the congregation, and all those impacted by the fire. This remains the first concern.
The cause of this fire remains under official investigation by the San Francisco Fire Department. We kindly ask all concerned to rely only on confirmed information from official channels.
The members of the Central California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, along with Adventists around the world, stand in full solidarity with the congregation of San Francisco Central. Our hearts are with the church family, neighbors, and the first responders working to protect the community. We are profoundly grateful for the swift and courageous response of the firefighters on the scene.
We are also grateful for the gracious hospitality of the San Francisco Philadelphian Seventh-day Adventist Church, which has generously opened its doors to the members of San Francisco Central. Beginning Sabbath, July 4, 2026, the San Francisco Central congregation will gather for worship at the San Francisco Philadelphian Seventh-day Adventist Church. This act of fellowship is a beautiful reminder that the church is not a building, but a community of believers united in Christ.
As more information becomes available, members and the community will be kept informed through official conference communication channels and the leadership of San Francisco Central Church. This statement is intended for church leaders and members and may also be shared with media and community partners.
