Why God Wants His Church to Be Healthy

Why does God want His church to be healthy? Because the church has a mission to fulfill. God established His church with a clear purpose—to lead people to Jesus and make disciples for His kingdom.

While pastors, elders, and church leaders have important roles to play, it is ultimately God who brings growth to His church. As the apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 3:6, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.” Human leaders may sow and nurture, but true growth comes only from the Lord.

So what, then, is the role of every church member?

The Bible teaches that we are all part of the body of Christ. Each member has a God-given function, and every role matters. As we serve together, we follow the direction of the Head of the church—Jesus Christ.

In Ephesians 4:11–16, we are reminded that God has given spiritual gifts to His people for the strengthening and building up of the church. Through these gifts:

The body of Christ is built up

We grow toward unity in the faith

We deepen in the knowledge of the Son of God

We mature spiritually

We reflect the fullness of Christ

We learn to speak the truth in love

The whole body grows and is built up in love, as each part does its work

This biblical picture of a healthy church is also reflected in a well-known international research project called Natural Church Development. This study examined more than 1,000 churches in 32 countries, across 18 languages and five continents, seeking to answer this question: How can we allow God to release the potential He has placed within His church?

The research identified eight essential qualities commonly found in healthy, growing churches:

Empowering Leadership

Gift-Oriented Ministry

Passionate Spirituality

Inspiring Worship

Holistic Small Groups

Need-Oriented Evangelism

Loving Relationships

Effective Structures

As we continue seeking the Lord’s guidance in leading His church, may we prayerfully ask Him to cultivate these qualities in our congregation. When we allow God to shape and strengthen His church, we become better equipped to accomplish His mission and reveal His love to the world.

Let us remain committed to being not only a busy church, but a healthy church—one that is growing in Christ, serving in love, and fulfilling God’s purpose.
