San Jose, Calif. — “This was worth the drive. We need this!” was the resounding feedback from participants who attended the Alive in Jesus curriculum training hosted at San Jose Spanish Seventh-day Adventist Church. The event drew 78 attendees and 10 trainers, providing a full day of hands-on learning, encouragement, and practical equipping for leaders serving children and families.

From the opening session, there was a palpable sense of purpose as leaders arrived ready to learn, share, and deepen their ministry calling. Workshop rooms buzzed with activity, laughter, and meaningful discussions as trainers introduced creative strategies for connecting with children and supporting parents.

The Beginners Workshop, led by Lisa Plasencia, CCC Director of Children’s Ministry, emphasized ministering not only to infants and toddlers but also to their parents. Participants learned how to use tone, body language, and time cues to guide behavior and transitions, while also discovering practical ways to involve families. “I’m so thankful for this workshop,” shared one participant. “I now have a clear understanding of how to communicate with the little ones in my class.”

In the Kindergarten and Primary sessions, offered in both English and Spanish, Pastor Gerry Lopez and his North American Division team engaged leaders with colorful sample lessons, visuals, plushie lambs, and stickers. Conversations focused on adapting the materials to local contexts. “This program connects with our kids in a beautiful way,” one Kindergarten leader reflected. “And the fact that it’s aligned with our values makes it even better.”

Teachers also highlighted the value of the journaling activities, which encourage children to reflect on and apply Bible lessons. “I’ve been teaching for years, and I still learned new ideas,” remarked a veteran teacher.

For Juniors and Youth, trainers Isaac Kim (SECC Children’s Ministries) and Pastor Samantha Peralta (Director of Growing Together Church) provided insight into the unique spiritual needs of preteens and teens. Leaders appreciated the Growing Together framework, which balances structure with flexibility. “I’m excited to try these ideas out next week,” one participant shared.

The event’s success was made possible by the warm hospitality of the San Jose Spanish church family. Local Children’s Ministry Director Gerson Perla coordinated logistics, introduced speakers, and translated throughout the day. Pastor Christian De Jesus and his church team ensured smooth operations, with Pathfinder students lending a hand in unloading supplies. Special recognition was given to Becky Speer of Lindsay, who volunteered more than fifteen hours to support the event.

Support from the North American Division’s Children’s Ministries team, including Associate Director Gerry Lopez, further underscored the collaborative spirit of the training. Together, local, Conference, and national leaders worked side by side to equip those serving on the front lines of children’s ministry.

By the end of the day, the hugs, photos, and follow-up questions spoke volumes. For many, the Alive in Jesus training was more than an event—it was a time of renewal. As one leader summed it up: “I feel more equipped and more inspired. Thank you for helping us teach our children to know Jesus.”
