According to the Oxford Dictionary, "transition" is "the process or a period of changing from one state or condition to another." Many embark on this journey without fully grasping its significance. From November 2 to November 9, Pastor Kwame Sarpong led his new congregations—East Palo Alto and San Jose Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Churches—in a transformative week-long revival themed "Transition." He emphasized that both he and the churches are on a path of growth and renewal.
On Sabbath, November 2, the revival began at East Palo Alto Seventh-day Adventist Church, joined by their sister church, San Jose Ephesus. Together, they embraced the significant changes within their community, starting with the sermon titled "The Ministry of Presence." Drawing from Exodus 33:12-15, Pastor Sarpong highlighted the importance of God's presence during this pivotal moment. Just as Moses refused to lead without God's assurance, Pastor Kwame shared that his move to the U.S. for ministry in the Central California Conference hinged entirely on God's presence with him. He also drew from his chaplaincy training to emphasize the value of being present, urging both churches to extend their presence beyond the walls by actively engaging with their community.
The following day, both churches met on Zoom to continue their journey. Pastor Kwame introduced the first phase of transition, "Signals of Change," with his sermon "Put on Notice." He emphasized that God provides signs indicating an impending change, communicating through signs, His word, or directly—as with Moses in Exodus 3. He urged everyone to remain vigilant and not overlook God's guidance toward new horizons.
On Day 3, the focus shifted to the second phase: "Ending Well." Pastor Kwame asserted that to transition successfully, we must "Let Go and Let God." He noted that many struggle to move forward because they cling to the past. He reminded everyone that God desires to do "a new thing" (Isaiah 43:18-19), but we may miss it if we hold onto what God asks us to release.
On Day 4, Pastor Sarpong discussed the "Disorientation" phase in his message "In the Valley." He stressed that many find it hard to move beyond this stage. In uncomfortable moments, we often seek control, comfort, and certainty, hindering our trust in God. He reassured that the valley is not just a place of hardship but a learning ground where we discover truths about ourselves and recognize God's constant guidance.
Day 5 introduced the final phase, "Reorientation." Pastor Kwame reminded that successful transitions require embracing "Small Beginnings." He emphasized that transitions demand patience and attention to detail, as God values faithfulness in little things (Luke 16:10). The Reorientation phase calls for intentional alignment with God's will, taking small yet meaningful steps. Whether committing to daily devotion or seeking reconciliation, these actions prepare us for the blessings God has in store.
The final day was a joyful celebration at San Jose Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church, where East Palo Alto joined their sister church. The revival culminated with uplifting music led by Brother Michael Turner and his band, a powerful message from Pastor Sarpong, and a fellowship lunch prepared by dedicated members.
Pastor Sarpong reminded members that despite completing all four phases, they should not settle into comfort. Echoing Paul's message to the Philippians, he urged them to "Press On." As Christians, we are called to strive toward the prize of God's upward call in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14), embody Christ, fulfill His will, and prepare ourselves and others for His return.
East Palo Alto and San Jose Ephesus Churches are indeed in a period of transition. We invite the CCC family to continue praying for them and their new pastor, Kwame Sarpong, as they embark on this journey to fulfill God's vision and make a meaningful impact in their communities.
